On Finding Balance and the Religion of Books

It seems like the older I get, the fast the days, weeks, months, and years go. I often get caught up in work and responsibilities, letting my peace of mind and health suffer the consequences of a busy life. Somehow it feels more productive to throw myself into work but if I take a step back and look I realize if I don’t take the time to recharge, I’m not bringing 100% of myself to any part of my life.

As I prepare for my first writing conference, I’m trying to remember to keep my days balanced and not let my to-do list run the show.

What do you need to include in your day to feel balanced?

Jamie Raintree is the author of Perfectly Undone and Midnight at the Wandering Vineyard. She is a voracious student of life, which is why she became a writer, where she could put all that acquired information to good use. She is a mother of two, a wife, a businesswoman, a nature-lover, and a wannabe yogi. She also teaches writers about business and productivity. Since the setting is always an important part of her books, she is happy to call the Rocky Mountains of Northern Colorado her home and inspiration.

  1. I’m with you on all the things you mentioned, including the screaming toddler. 🙂
I read in bed every night, even if it’s only for a few minutes. I feel like I would be a completely different person without books in my life.

When I don’t write, I feel itchy and don’t sleep as well. When everything else is out of balance, even working on character sketches or prompts from The Fire in Fiction leaves me knowing I’ve taken at least a tiny step towards my goals.

Meditation is something I’ve found helpful, and it comes in many forms for me- a quiet walk, paying attention to the world around me, even a hard run, or the traditional closing my eyes and just breathing.

I look forward to more videos and thank you for the reminder to maintain balance in our lives.

    1. I took up walking this summer so I know exactly what you mean–it’s very meditative, just putting one foot in front of the other and getting out in the sunshine. It has become my prescription for everything. Lol!

      Keep moving forward! 🙂
