NaNoWriMo 2012, A Summary and Some Tips

What do you get when you combine sleep-deprivation, two kids and an insane deadline? I’m still looking in the mirror to try to decide what to call it. I’ll get back to you on that. Regardless, I won! My fifth consecutive year of participating in and winning National Novel Writing Month is complete and would you believe that the way this year played out was still a shock to me? Before I explain why, I’ll give you the customary screenshot and obligatory squee. “Here...

How to NaNoWriMo During Thanksgiving

Here in the US, Thanksgiving is celebrated on November 22nd this year–right as National Novel Writing Month participants are rounding the corner to the finish line. Thanksgiving may very well be one of the most demanding holidays of the year between the cooking, visiting families (many times, more than one!), turkey comas, and festivities that can last an entire four day weekend. For some “Wrimos” this is the point where they give up the goal and resolve to do better next...

NaNoWriMo = Draft Zero

Originally posted at Hugs & Chocolate November is just around the corner and after four years of participating in National Novel Writing Month, even the change in weather has my nerves buzzing with anticipation, like my internal editor is well-prepared for her yearly vacation. In my excitement, I can’t help asking every writer I know if he or she is participating. Misery loves company. I’m getting a lot of mixed responses–some are die hards like me who are raring to...

NaNoWriMo ’11 – Complete!

I won! For the fourth year in a row, I reached 50,000 words in the month of November and became an official National Novel Writing Month winner for 2011. Like I said last year, it really doesn’t get old. My final day didn’t start off well, though. My daughter got sick earlier this week and any parent knows how much fun that is. She was in a bad mood all day, didn’t want anything and wouldn’t go down for a nap. By the time my husband got home, I was at the end of my...

NaNoWriMo ’11 – Day 21

Today marks the 2/3 point of National Novel Writing Month 2011 and I have to admit, this year has been a struggle. I’ve kept pretty well on track but it hasn’t been an easy process. With my 18 month old (as of tomorrow!) running around the house like an energizer bunny, my 21 week old baby-to-be stealing all my energy, and working twice as hard as ever, making the time to think about my story let alone actually write it has been a challenge to say the least. But I know there are...

NaNoWriMo ’10 – Day 30 (Or, It Never Gets Old)

Author, on November 1 you accepted our challenge to write a novel in 30 days. Harnessed with a hard deadline, you persevered in the face of countless obstacles. You wrote with determination, you quieted that inner critic, and now you’ve reached the hallowed Winner’s Circle. We couldn’t be more proud of your amazing accomplishment! Thank you for joining us on this outrageously creative adventure—we’ll see you next November for more. Crossing that finish line and...

NaNoWriMo ’10 – Day 23

I’m looking down the line of the last week of National Novel Writing Month and waving at my winner’s certificate. Tomorrow is officially the start of the final 7 days of NaNoWriMo 2010 and I’m floating right along with exactly the prescribed word count for each day. Unless the apocalypse happens before next Tuesday, I’ve got this cat in the bag. *looks around suspiciously* This past week has been pretty awesome. I’ve had a few days where I wrote very little, if...

NaNoWriMo ’10 – Day 16

Merlin’s Beard, we’re halfway there! It’s flying by so fast! I thought this year would be like pulling teeth but I’ve found it to be the easiest yet. I love this story, yes, but I think more than anything it’s because I’m so busy. Have you ever heard the saying, “If you want to get something done, ask a busy person”? I’m that busy person. Last week was a slow week but I had my cushion and I used that baby like a life preserver through...

NaNoWriMo ’10 – Day 9

The first week of NaNoWriMo is over. It’s been a pretty good week, I must admit. It didn’t start off so hot but I kept up with my word count goals each day. It was so nice to finally start writing the story that’s been in my head for months! The highlight of my entire week, though, was my goal to write 5,000 words over the weekend. That’s 2,500 words each day. I hopped on with @NaNoWordSprints and my husband graciously took the baby for me and believe it or not, it...

NaNoWriMo ’10 – Day 3

At 11:50 p.m. on October 31st, I sat poised at my computer, fueled by Halloween candy and @NaNoWordSprints, just waiting for the clock to strike midnight. Every year, before I go to bed on the first, I like to have the first day’s words written so I can start off a full day ahead. That’s what I intended to do this year. Then the baby wanted to eat. Then the baby wanted to go down for a nap. Then the baby wanted me to go completely insane with frustration. I saw midnight tick...
